Fraction Conversion Guide

Fraction to Decimal

Divide the numerator by the denominator. For example, 3/4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75

3 ÷ 4 = 0.75

Fraction to Percentage

Convert to decimal first, then multiply by 100. For example, 3/4 = 0.75 = 75%

3/4 = 0.75 = 75%

Improper to Mixed Number

Divide numerator by denominator. The quotient is the whole number, remainder is new numerator.

7/4 = 1 3/4

Simplify Fractions

Find the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) of numerator and denominator, divide both by it.

4/8 = 1/2 (GCD is 4)

Common Denominator

Find the Least Common Multiple (LCM) of denominators to add or subtract fractions.

1/3 + 1/4 = 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12

Multiply Fractions

Multiply numerators together and denominators together. Simplify if possible.

1/2 × 2/3 = 2/6 = 1/3

Real World Examples

Pizza Sharing

You have 3/4 of a pizza and eat 1/3 of what's left. How much pizza remains?

3/4 × (1 - 1/3) = 3/4 × 2/3 = 6/12 = 1/2

Recipe Scaling

A recipe calls for 2/3 cup of flour but you want to make 1.5 times the recipe.

2/3 × 3/2 = 6/6 = 1 cup

Measurement Conversion

You need 3/8 of an inch but your ruler shows 16ths. What's the equivalent?

3/8 = 6/16 (multiply numerator and denominator by 2)

Survey Results

In a survey, 5/8 of respondents preferred option A. What percentage is this?

5 ÷ 8 = 0.625 = 62.5%

Discount Calculation

An item is 1/3 off. If the original price was $90, what's the sale price?

$90 × (1 - 1/3) = $90 × 2/3 = $60

Race Progress

A runner completes 2/5 of a race. If the race is 10 miles, how far has she run?

2/5 × 10 = 20/5 = 4 miles
