DPI vs PPI: DPI (Dots Per Inch) refers to printer resolution, while PPI (Pixels Per Inch) refers to screen resolution. For digital design, they're often used interchangeably, but 72-96 PPI is standard for web, while 300+ DPI is needed for print.

Understanding Pixel Conversion

What are Pixels?

Pixels are the smallest addressable elements in a digital image. They are dimensionless units that represent a single color value. Resolution in pixels defines how much detail an image contains.

DPI vs PPI Explained

PPI (Pixels Per Inch): Digital screens - determines screen sharpness.
DPI (Dots Per Inch): Printing - determines print quality. Higher DPI means more ink dots per inch, resulting in sharper prints.

Conversion Formula

Pixels to Inches: inches = pixels ÷ DPI
Inches to Pixels: pixels = inches × DPI
Centimeters to Pixels: pixels = (cm × DPI) ÷ 2.54

Why Resolution Matters

Low resolution images appear pixelated when printed large. High resolution images have more detail but larger file sizes. The right balance depends on your use case (web vs print).

Common Use Cases & Recommendations

Web & Social Media

72-96 PPI is standard for web. Facebook cover: 820 × 312px, Instagram post: 1080 × 1080px, Twitter header: 1500 × 500px.

Print Materials

300 DPI minimum for quality prints. Business card: 3.5" × 2" at 300 DPI = 1050 × 600px. A4 poster: 8.3" × 11.7" at 300 DPI = 2490 × 3510px.

Mobile Apps

Design at 1×, 2×, and 3× sizes for different screen densities. iPhone app icon: 1024 × 1024px (marketing), 180 × 180px (app store).

Digital Signage

Typically 72-150 PPI depending on viewing distance. 4K digital sign: 3840 × 2160px. Consider lower PPI for large signs viewed from afar.
